The San Luis Obispo Performing Art Center, which is a collaboration between the city of San Luis Obispo and Cal Poly University, features music, dance and live entertainment from professional ranks as well as student productions. You can also take in a vaudeville show at the Great American Melodrama.
The SLO Symphony Orchestra performs regularly at Christopher Cohen Center. Take the whole family to a free and informal dress rehearsal. The symphony also brings its talents to events like Pops by the Sea on Avila Beach.

The Hearst Castle, built by William Randolph Hearst, is one of the largest and most opulent homes in America. The architecture, furnishings and artwork are extraordinary. Tours and special events are held on a regular basis. The Mission San Luis Obispo do Tolosa church was built in 1793 and still holds services today. It is a fine example of the efforts of Spanish missionaries early in our history.
Madonna Inn has a shorter history and a different atmosphere than the mission, but is a local landmark everyone wants to see. The original owner started with 10 rooms in 1958 and expanded to the present 110 rooms, each decorated with an individual theme. Locals enjoy a trip to the Inn around major holidays to see the holiday decorations.
History buffs can see how much things have changed at the Arroyo Grande heritage buildings which house displays of agricultural history, household items and clothing from the early 1900’s.
Our areas wineries are open for tours and tastings, a pleasant way to spend the day. Try a range of wines and winemakers’ goods at tasting rooms in the area.
Play sports indoors at the historic Pismo Bowl which has provided open lanes since 1939. Stay active at places like the Pismo Beach Athletic Club or Avila Bay Fitness and Tennis Club which offer court sports, exercise machines and fitness training.
If you love shopping, there are a myriad of quaint and unusual shops in the Five Cities offering beach items to antiques. You can visit nationally well known stores in San Luis Obispo or see the goods at outlets like the Premium Outlet Mall in Pismo Beach.
And when you need to rest from all the activities, head to one of the hot mineral springs or spas that offer every service to relax and pamper a tired patron.
